In an effort to produce the largest, fastest and most luxurious ship afloat, the British built the S.S. Titanic. It was so superior to anything else on the seas that it was dubbed ‘unsinkable’. So sure of this were the owners that they provided only twenty life boats and rafts, less than one-half the number needed for the 2,227 passengers on board. Many passengers were aboard the night it rammed an iceberg only two days at sea and more than halfway between England and its New-York destination. Because the luxury liner was travelling so fast, it was impossible to avoid the ghostly looking iceberg. An unextinguished fire also contributed to the ship’s submersion. Panic increased the number of casualties as people jumped into the icy water or fought to be among the few to board the life boats. Four hours after the mishap, another ship, the ‘Carpathia’, rescued 705 survivors. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The S.S Titanic Proved itself the most seaworthy vessel in 1912
B. Attempts to rescue the S.S Titanoc's survivors were not successful
C. Overconfidence by builders and owners was greatly responsible for the sinking of the vessel .
D. The fire and panic were the only causes for the sinking of the ship.

- In 1992, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that ten to twelve million adults and one million children worldwide had contracted HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and they estimated that by the 21st century, forty million people would be infected. If the current trends continue, however, that estimate will fall far short of actual numbers, which may reach one hundred ten million. Beside people with high-risk behavior such as homosexuals, female sex workers, truck drivers and injection rates have begun to increase in the general population. In addition, there appears to be a change in the characteristics of AIDS victims. In the 1980s, homosexual men in large urban areas accounted for approximately two thirds of all AIDS cases. Women and children seemed to be in the periphery of the AIDS epidemic. But today almost 90% of new adult infections result from heterosexual contacts. Consequently, the rates of exposure and infection are rising for women, with and accompanying rise in the number of children born to them with HIV. In the 21st century it is expected that the majority of AIDS victims will be heterosexual women and their young children. - [{"text": "Increased numbers of women in science can only be a good thing. Not simply because it is grossly unjust for women to be unable to experience the challenging but also hugely intellectually rewarding experience of participating in scientific research, but also because the cost to society of excluding women is intoleraby high. We need the very best minds going into science, and it stands to reason that if women are excluded, we cut this resource in half. What's more, women bring new ways of thinking and a broader range of ideas to the table, which is crucial for science to flourish. All scientists have a responsibility to be feminists and encourage women to participate in science and fight the barriers that exist. However, this is often more easily said than done. There are several proposed reasons for why women are discouraged from participating in science at a range of levels - form primary school children to professors. Among other things, these include a lack of role models and support networks - as well as harassment and bullying - but also less obvious barriers, for example, unconscious biases in job interviews and letters of reference. In the end, the way to tackle prejudice against women is to increase awareness of the particular challenges faced by female scientists and to put systems in place that promote equal opportunities. Meanwhile, we need outstanding female role models to show unequivocally that women can compete on the sameintellectual level as men and encourage other women to follow their lead. - [{"text": "The crystal clear, blue water and the magnificent sun make the Caribbean island of Saint Maarten a favorite vacation spot, one that is popular with North Americans during their winter holidays from December through March, as well as with South Americans and Europeans from April through August. The French and Dutch settled on the island in the 1600s, and to this day, the island is divided between the two of them. The French capital is Marigot; the Dutch capital is Philipsburg. Tourists soon discover that St. Maarten has an intriguing history. Ancient artifacts found on the island date back to the Stone Age, 6,000 years ago! Tourists also learn that 1,200 years ago the Arawak Indians inhabited all the islands of the West Indies and were a peaceful people living under the guidance of their chiefs. Three hundred years after the Arawaks first arrived on St. Maarten, in the 1300s, they were defeated and forced to abandon the island by a hostile tribe of Indians originating in South America. This new tribe was called the Carib. The Caribbean Sea was named after them. Unlike the Arawaks, they had no permanent chiefs or leaders, except in times of strife. And they were extremely warlike. Worse, they were cannibalistic, eating the enemy warriors they captured. In fact, the very word cannibal comes from the Spanish name for the Carib Indians.
