One of the Sumerians' most remarkable inventions, which they perfected about the time the Sumerian era was opening (around 3200 B.C.) was wheeled transport. Wheeled transport was unknown in Egypt until about 1700 B.C. In as early as about 400 B.C., Wheels were used in pottery-making in Iran, from whence they entered | Sumer about 500 years later. The knowledge of wheel from pottery-making was obvious: the Egyptians knew | the potter wheel by at least 2700 B. C., but they did not use the wheel for transport until a millennium later, even then they probably did not \"reinvent the wheel\" but learned of it from contacts with Mesopotamia. Thus the unknown Sumerian who first attached wheels to a sledge to make better transportation vehicle really does have to be counted among the greatest technological geniuses of all time. The earliest Sumerian wheeled vehicles were two-wheeled chariots and four-wheeled carts. Both were drawn by oxen\u00a0(horses were unknown in western Asia until they were introduced by Eastern invaers sometime between 2000 and 1700 B.C.), and both were mounted on wheels that were solid, not spoked: two or thiec slabs of wood were shaped into a circle and fastened together with studs or braces. Ox-drawn chariots obviously did not move very quickly, yet they appear to have contributed to an advance in phalanx warfare, for surviving illustrations dating from about 2600 B.C depict them tram trampling the enemy. Carts meant for hauling freight had less need for speed and must have aided the Sumerians immeasurable in their numerous irrigation and urban building projects.
